Olive Tree
A symbol of prosperity, peace, fertility and well-being, the olive tree has been an object of worship from time immemorial. A gift to man from the goddess Athena, it is encountered throughout the Mediterranean. Olympic victors were crowned with an olive wreath. In Kefalonia you can still hear a version of the legend of Cinderella, known locally as Stachtiaro, who found the precious gift of life in the roots of an ancient olive tree as a reward for the respect she had shown to the traditions of the island.
