Daphne
It was the name of a nymph, the doughter of god- river Ladona, who fell in love with God Apollo. Daphne was a pretty but restless girl and when god Apollo asked for her she denied him and took refuge to her mother Earth, who in turn transformed her to a tree. Since then the Daphne tree is dedicated to Apollo and was used as a purging and expiation mean because of its aromatic characteristics. According to the myth, when Apollo killed the dragon Python washed himself in the river, where even today you will find Daphne trees, and entered Delphi as a clear winner crwned with Daphne. Since then Daphne stands as the symbol of glory and honnor. According to Pausanias Apollo's old temple was build by Daphne branches.
